Replacement policies for a proxy cacheLuigi

چکیده
In this paper we analyse access traces to a Web proxy, looking at statistical parameters to be used in the design of a replacement policy for documents held in the cache. In the rst part of the paper we present a number of properties of the lifetime and statistics of access to documents, derived from two large trace sets coming from very diierent proxies and spanning over time intervals of up to ve months. In the second part of the paper we propose a novel replacement policy, called LRV, which selects for replacement the document with the Lowest Relative Value among those in cache. The value of a document is computed adaptively basing on information readily available to the proxy server. The algorithm has no hardwired constants, and the computations associated with the replacement policy require only a small constant time. We show how LRV outperforms LRU and other policies, and can signiicantly improve the performance of the cache, especially a for small one.

Evaluation of Randomized Replacement Policies for Web Caches
This paper presents a comparison of the performance of seven randomized replacement policies proposed for Web caching (RAND, HARMONIC, LRU-C, LRU-S, CLIMB-C, CLIMB-S and RRGVF) and the classical LRU scheme widely used in Web proxy caches. This comparison is performed using a Web cache simulator that implements the aforementioned replacement policies and uses a workload of real proxy traces to s...
متن کاملExploiting Regularities in Web Traac Patterns for Cache Replacement
Caching web pages at proxies and in web servers' memories can greatly enhance performance. Proxy caching is known to reduce network load and both proxy and server caching can signiicantly decrease latency. Web caching problems have diierent properties than traditional operating systems paging , and cache replacement can beneet by recognizing and exploiting these diierences. We address two aspec...
متن کاملImproving Performance on WWW using Intelligent Predictive Caching for Web Proxy Servers
Web proxy caching is used to improve the performance of the Web infrastructure. It aims to reduce network traffic, server load, and user perceived retrieval delays. The heart of a caching system is its page replacement policy, which needs to make good replacement decisions when its cache is full and a new document needs to be stored. The latest and most popular replacement policies like GDSF an...
متن کاملProxy Cache Coherency and Replacement | Towards aMore Complete
This work studies the interaction of Web proxy cache coherency and replacement policies using trace-driven simulations. We speciically examine the relative importance of each type of policy in aaecting the overall costs, the potential of incorporating coherency issues in cache replacement and the inclusion of additional factors such as frequency of resource use in replacement and coherency poli...
متن کاملProWGen: a synthetic workload generation tool for simulation evaluation of web proxy caches
This paper describes the design and use of a synthetic Web proxy workload generator called ProWGen to investigate the sensitivity of Web proxy cache replacement policies to five selected Web workload characteristics. Three representative cache replacement policies are considered in the simulation study: a recency-based policy called Least-Recently-Used (LRU), a frequency-based policy called Lea...
